If you are intending to travel or holiday outside Europe you will need to take out a worldwide travel insurance policy. These are available as single trip or annual/multi trip policies. Because the USA has extortionate medical costs to reduce the cost of worldwide travel insurance most insurers offer 2 cover options. You can choose a cheaper policy that will generally not include cover for travel to the USA, Canada and Caribbean or a more expensive policy that will cover the world with the possible exceptions of countries that the UK's FCO deem are not safe to visit. 
 
If you take more than one trip abroad each year it is worth checking prices on an annual trip policy as you might find it cheaper than buying multiple single trip policies.

The single trip policy is not available to anyone aged 86 or over. The annual multi trip policy is not available to anyone aged 75 or over.
For persons aged up to 64, the single trip policy covers trips up to a maximum of 365 days in duration and for persons aged 65 to 85 up to a maximum of 183 days in duration.
